Moving to a new home often comes with a mountain of admin — contracts, utilities, packing, and paperwork. So, adding one more thing to your list might not sound appealing. But taking a moment to review your protection policies should be a key part of the process.
According to new research, one in four policyholders have moved house since first taking out their protection cover — yet 32% have never reviewed their policy.
First-Time Buyers and Life Milestones
Big life changes often inspire people to get protection insurance. Events like having a child or getting married are common triggers. However, buying a first home remains the most popular reason to take out cover.
At this milestone moment, people most commonly choose:
- Critical illness cover (26%)
- Income protection (23%)
- Life insurance (21%)
Time for a Review?
While first-time buyers tend to think about protection when buying their first property, it’s just as important to review your cover when you move again — whether it’s your second, third, or even tenth home.
Any major change in circumstances — a new mortgage, a different location, or new financial responsibilities — could mean your current level of cover no longer fits your needs.
Get Your Protection Sorted
Interestingly, the research also found that 63% of people have looked at their policy without making any updates. That means even those who took the important step of getting protection might be leaving themselves exposed to gaps in cover.
So, don’t delay — when you move, review your protection to make sure your cover still works for you and your new home.
