Whether it’s a pet or a car, life’s “firsts” often bring out strong emotions. But when it comes to their first homes, today’s first-time buyers (FTBs) seem to be far less sentimental than previous generations.
A recent survey revealed that one in four FTBs are ready to move on from their first home after just four and a half years on average. The main reason? A lack of space.
In an effort to climb onto the property ladder, over half (51%) of first-time buyers settle for smaller properties — studio flats or one- to two-bedroom homes — even if they already have dependents.
Affordability also pushes many to make compromises on location. In fact, two-thirds of first-time buyers end up purchasing homes in areas they weren’t familiar with before.
This practical mindset means that people are moving on to their second homes much sooner than in the past. Compare that to older generations: 20% of Britons over the age of 80 are still living in their very first homes.
Times have changed — and for today’s buyers, the first home is no longer a forever home, but a stepping stone to the next chapter.
